9th Annual Open Day

The event hosted at the iconic mosque on Banda Street, attracted hundreds of visitors from various faiths eager to learn more about Islam and the mosque’s longstanding role in promoting interfaith harmony. Since its inception in 2018, the Jamia Open Day has become a signature annual event that brings together people of diverse religious backgrounds to experience life inside one of Kenya’s most prominent mosques. This year’s edition offered participants a rare opportunity to explore the mosque, engage with Muslim scholars and volunteers, and dispel common misconceptions about Islam. Organized by the Jamia Da’wah Department, the program featured interactive sessions, exhibitions, and guided tours.
Notably, ten individuals embraced Islam by reciting the Shahada — the Islamic declaration of faith. The day was marked by an atmosphere of curiosity, openness, and hospitality. Visitors freely toured the mosque’s facilities, interacted with volunteers, captured memorable moments through photos, and participated in a lively Question-and-Answer session with scholars, including Sheikh Ibrahim Lethome, on topics of faith, peace, and social coexistence. Speaking after the event, Sheikh Jamaludin Osman, Imam of Jamia Mosque Nairobi, described the Open Day as a unique platform for the public to engage directly with Islam. He added that Jamia Mosque remains committed to fostering unity and understanding among Kenyans of all backgrounds.
Jamia Mosque belongs to the community. Our doors remain open for dialogue and learning because Islam stands for peace and compassion,” Sheikh Jamaludin emphasized. Inside the mosque, Sheikh Ibrahim Njuguna welcomed visitors to the mimbar (pulpit), where he led open discussions addressing their questions about Islam. The Jamia Multipurpose Hall, filled to capacity, hosted engaging talks by Sheikh Ibrahim Lethome, Sheikh Athman Abdallah, and Da’wah Officer Sheikh Ratib Abdunoor, among others. Visitors were also given the opportunity to observe the Dhuhr (midday) prayer, witnessing firsthand the discipline, unity, and serenity that define the Islamic prayer experience — a moment that powerfully complemented the day’s discussions on faith and coexistence.
